MARY, DID YOU REALLY KNOW?

Every Christmas, I hear that song “Mary Did You Know?” This year, however, it is making me ponder.

Did Mary really know that she was delivering God in human form? Did she really understand the magnitude of being responsible for Jesus from birth? Did she really understand that Jesus gave up His powers to be limited in a human body?

Of all the people involved in the birth and ministry of Jesus, I would have to believe that Mary had the best idea of Who Jesus was. She alone was 100% sure that this baby was not conceived by man, but by God. Joseph had a dream and visit from an angel and was assured about the baby. In those days, these two people had the absolute knowledge that they were chosen to become parents to Jesus.

Thinking about this event leads me to several questions:

How did this knowledge affect Mary and Joseph’s attitude toward Jesus?
Was He treated differently than the other children born to Mary and Joseph?
Was He given preferential treatment?
Did Jesus obey his earthly parents?
Did Jesus’ half-brothers and half-sisters ever really believe that He is Emmanuel?
Later, as Jesus began His ministry, He chose twelve apostles to follow him and “become fishers of men.” Did Peter, James, John, and the other apostles know that Jesus is God incarnate?

How would you act if you were Mary or Joseph?
I would probably spend my life in awe of the fact that I held His tiny baby hands and later watched those same hands be nailed cruelly to a cross. I would hope that contemplation upon our Savior in human form would make me strive to be like Him.

Perhaps the most profound question I can leave you with is this:

Do WE know that Jesus is God, the great I Am, the Mighty Counselor, the King of Kings, and that He is the only way to salvation?

It is never too late to understand we are sinners, repent, know we deserve to die, and ask Jesus into our hearts, where He alone can bring joy, peace, and eternal life.

In the time that Jesus walked the earth, people could see Him and touch Him. For us, however, “we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). Committing these words to memory help me keep the goal of Jesus in sight.
