The general public on a Sunday morning. They aren’t sitting next to us in church—well, maybe the odd one or two.

They’re in bed, reading the newspaper, watching the cable TV, doing the garden, on the Internet, going to the shops. Anywhere but in the church. These facts are staring all of us in the face. Yet in spite of it, many pastors and ministers still believe the multitudes are going to come to church, hear the message and get saved.

Mr and Mrs Unbeliever just won’t be coming to church. When is the thunderstorm of that truth going to drench our leaders and the whole body of Christ? So what is required? We have to go to them, of course!

Did Jesus say in Mark 16:15 “Non-believers shall come into the church and be saved?” You know He didn’t say that! Why then the mistaken belief He did?

Billy Graham knew half a century ago the general public wouldn’t go into the churches. They would however go to a boxing arena, a football, baseball, or soccer stadium. They were used to that. They went to those places all the time. It wouldn’t be that much different going there to hear Billy Graham. So they went, huge crowds—and they got saved. Then they started to attend church.

We need that kind of imaginative evangelism today.

Jesus said: “Broad is the road that leads to destruction” but it doesn’t mean we leave the unsaved to their fate.

There’s an interesting ad in our local newspaper. It’s for a large downtown pub. Coming attractions for Sunday night are listed: Randy and the Rockers in one room, Bingo in another, and in another—surprise, surprise—Church in the Pub with Pastor Rob. Now there’s a guy with intuition and understanding. I don’t how many are in his congregation, but he’s going to them! Hallelujah!

The light has dawned upon that dear man. There should be hundreds like him all over Australia, and thousands across the world. Then we’d see something happen. Then we’d see the church resembling what we read in Acts—what God intended it to be!

People aren’t seeking a church—even if it sees itself as the “in-thing”—jumping and clapping and singing the same song a dozen times! People don’t want a different kind of religious ritual. They want to see the real, living Jesus. His followers with love in their hearts, people who really care, people with a light in their face that doesn’t disappear at the church exit.

We have to be like Pastor Rob and take Jesus to them wherever they are found. The Master led by example.
