Larry Lilly's Letter Tuessday October 11, 2005

False bravado seems to be the order of the day and most likely will be for some time to come.

In February 2003 with America teetering on the verge of war with Iraq, Secretary of State Colin Powell was reminded that, not withstanding the stress, President George W. Bush was in bed every night by 10 o’clock sleeping like a baby. Secretary Powell replied:

"I sleep like a baby, too. Every two hours I wake up screaming."

Could it be that President Bush viewed the pending war from the eyes of an executive and General Powell from the eyes of a battle hardened warrior with a long list of personal war stories?

Spiritually blind men and women see themselves as in need, but not anything need that cannot be met by common sense or a little help from Dr. Phil.

Christ sees us as sinners and in light of this true insight about us, He doesn't wake up screaming, but He did die for us on the cross.

Many people of God who are attuned to the times and to the truth of scripture agree that one of the major problems with modern church is the failure to see human beings as God sees them and the failure of individuals to see themselves as God sees them.

The church tends to water down the terrible picture of sinful creatures described by the Lord in the scripture. Individuals see themselves as misguided, mistake laden creatures or in many cases as victims of natural selection and through some cosmic chance they are here on earth with no particular purpose and certainly no accountability to some higher power.

Until the church sees humans through the eyes of Christ, the church will always fail to help fallen humans at their deepest level of need. The church will design programs that will help people deal with the consequences of mistakes, but will for the most fail or refuse to deal with the problem, which is sin. If the church sees men as merely mistake prone, then the church will help folks to feel better about themselves. For time. Eternity is a horse of a different color. At heavens gate the line "I paid for my mistakes" may ring true, but what about your sin? When sin is in the mix, someone beside yourself must do the paying! And that someone must be qualified, so qualified that no man except one, the Lord Jesus, can make the payment. And the question of this and any hour is always, "What will you do with Christ?"

More of us need to get a clear view of the biblical truth concerning man and join with General Powell and sleep like babies, waking up screaming every two hours, thinking of the horrible condition of our lost loved ones.
