Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 10, 2005

I am using a verse today that will surely get the hackles of some folks to their full up position. People who have their hackles in the full up position have been known to be very dangerous. As this article unfolds you will think that I am working hard to infuriate all of my faithful women readers and supporters. Nothing could be farther from the truth, for the biblical truth that is posited in this missile is far more painful to the male of the species than to many honest women with whom I have discussed the issue at hand. Let me share a verse which at first glance smacks our modern philosophy right between the eyes. Are you ready? Are you sure? Hang on!

Titus 2:5, "To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."

Paul is teaching a pastor what to teach the women in the church Titus was pastoring!

The current myth that women would be bored out of their gourd if they followed the teaching of Paul to Titus is of course an Urban lie. Under the tutelage of Satan we Americans have bought the idea that the nurturing of children in the home is a waste of time for the fairer sex to commit to. I find it strange that while pastors with the need for huge offerings to pay for the substitute programs for mother are silent for the most part on the place of mother, the secular media has been reporting that new studies have found that children, at least for the first three years do better when nurtured in the home with mother present. Talk about news.

Tony Campolo when speaking on this subject tells a powerful story about his wife and her role as Mom:

"Too many women are made to feel that they should apologize for being mothers or housewives. In reality, such roles can be noble callings. When I was on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania there were gatherings from time to time to which faculty members brought their spouses. Inevitably some woman doctor would confront my wife with the question, 'And what do you do, my dear?' My wife, who has given her life to raise our two sons and who, by the way, is one of the most brilliantly articulate individuals I know, had a great response. She would say: 'I am socializing two Homo sapiens in the dominant values of the Judeo-Christian tradition on the premise that they might be instruments for the transformation of the social order into the teleologically utopia inherent in the eschaton.' When she followed that with, 'And what do YOU do?' the other person’s response just wasn't that overpowering."

In my over forty years of catching 'it' over teaching biblical truth I have found that more men than women oppose the biblical model for financial reasons. If the biblical model were followed a smaller house would be the norm, and even, God forbid, a used car and away with the country club and the designer clothes, ad nauseam. I actually heard one brave leader of the pack of wimps berating his wife to 'get a regular job.' Her retort was, 'Give me a verse for that command!'

I shall leave you now and yes, I am returning to my cave to talk with Jesus and Paul.
