Though we are the body of Christ we are hurting. Our pasts are full of neglect, mistreatment and guilt. We are carrying this over to the present.

"When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, 'Do you want to be made well?'" (John 5:6)

I am overwhelmed lately with the pain that so many Christians still feel from old wounds. We hide and try to ignore these painful lesions, yet still our pasts come back to disturb us in the form of bad habits, depression, short tempers, low self esteem, etc.

The symptoms of our sickness are our behavior patterns and interpersonal dealings. We continue to make the same poor choices and return to the negative things we learned from our hurtful pasts. For many folks the pain is so ingrained we think or say we do not still suffer. However a candid look at the things we do, say, think and even the way we love reveals our infection.

We still hold on to bitterness and resentment regarding our parents, spouses and authority figures who violated our trust. The wounds are very deep from abuse and emotional abandonment. Often we make others the brunt of our pain. We blame ourselves and others, and don't fully shake it. We have not forgiven ourselves. Our hearts have become vaults where we hide our pain and shame.

As long as we let the injury fester, we will not have true peace in our hearts or homes. Obviously we must treat the effects, but the solution lays in locating the real cause. Then we can let God heal us. Like a cancer we need to remove the core and not just treat the symptoms. We have to, with God’s help, examine, locate and remove these spiritual tumors. Start at the beginning and deal with your old hurts to see which are still tender. As you find these sore spots give them to the LORD.

With gentleness and no condemnation, go over your life while praying that God will reveal to you the roots of your pain. Take time and care to do this. Probably the most helpful and healing approach is to honestly write your own history. You will be amazed at the truths you'll learn about yourself. Then as you perceive your original wounds let God free you and deliver you from your past. "He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds." (Psalm 147:3) We cannot but God can and will.

Jesus read "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised…" (Luke 4:18) Obviously Jesus came for us.

"And He said to her, 'Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.'" (Mark 5:34)

Once and for always be made whole. In Jesus’ name

Our body is healing. Our future is full of God’s forgiveness, presence and love. Carry this through the present.
