Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 3, 2005
I am always amazed at the ideas that pop into my mind as I read or speak, often times these little gems are helpful in making a difficult point, other times they simply make a simple point more clear.
As I spoke the other morning, I said:
"The strength of your commitment is measured by what it takes to get you off track."
I probably read the above somewhere, but the Great Blonde says I heard her say it some years ago. Either way she said or should have said it. If I read it, the article must have been quoting her! 41 years working on the Golden.
Paul dealt with the problem of weak commitment when he told the Galatians, "Ye did run well, who did hinder you?" Without hindrances anyone could live a life of commitment, but we honor those who overcome the little or big things that stop the uncommitted.
I learned years ago when interviewing men or women for jobs in sales, if they told me they would try to do their best, proceeding was largely a waste of time, training and treasure. On the other hand when a person said; "Yes, I will give it my best shot," this strong statement of commitment usually meant they really would give the project at hand their all.
D.L. Moody said, "You can determine the greatness of a man by what it takes to stop him." Same thing I said earlier. I am not dealing with greatness just a life of faithfulness, a life that brings deep inner satisfaction to the person living it for the glory of the Lord Jesus.
Much is written about the unwillingness of younger people in this time to make commitments. Of course this is not true, as people of all ages make commitments, though they have no intention of keeping the commitment if the going gets tough, or God forbid, that worst of all things in life, boring!
The church at large has exchanged a life of challenge for a life of excitement, of funner times while preparing for the stake of persecution. (Luc, I do not like the term 'funner' either). The church in which I cut my spiritual teeth was blessed with a dear saint who directed the nursery program for over 30 years, and she did it with joy in her spirit. She found nothing boring about inculcating truth into young lives. In today's world I travel to churches often where nursery workers are expected to commit for one service every 3 or 6 months and at the end of the year they are awarded pins that are larger than a real cross!
Enough of my ranting, I am sounding like an old evangelist from years ago, Bob Oughton, who predicted such zealous commitment from future Christians!
The question for the purpose of this letter is simple, what about your level of commitment? Really? What does it take to get you off track?
“The strength of your commitment is measured by what it takes to get you off track.”
