Splashes of Joy
"He who refreshes others will himself be refreshed." Prov. 11:25
It was a hot day in July. To help ease our misery, my three kids and I were engaged in a backyard water battle. The garden hose was my “weapon of choice” on that sultry afternoon.
That was many years ago, but if I listen close enough, I can still hear their delighted screams of joy, as they ran away from me.
It was impossible to stay dry, as I chased my prey, shot them down, and soaked them real good. Of course, that was part of the “battle strategy”, for the “chaser” to get a good soaking, too. “Splashes of joy” for my body and mind. The refresher was being refreshed!
Isn’t that true, in a spiritual sense? It is impossible to give out hope, or joy, or lend a hand to one in need, without some of it splashing back on you.
Perhaps that is due, in part, to the truth of another scripture, “A man reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7b)
It may not happen quite as fast as my backyard battle might imply, but it will happen, my friend. When you reach out with what you have, be it a word of encouragement, a smile, a hug, or a loaf of bread, you are building up a reservoir in your own backyard.
One day, when you, the one who has refreshed others, are in need, you are going to get a good soaking of “goodness and mercy”. They’re going to chase you down and refresh your soul and your life. It is a spiritual law that cannot be nullified.
Knowing this, I encourage you, today, to get out your own “weapon of choice”. Don’t wait to be refreshed. Look for, and “chase down” one who needs refreshing. And always keep a towel close by.
