Written 9-20-05

His name meant my Lord is God,
A name of infinite vision;
He continued the Lord to laud,
As king Ahab fostered derision.

One most human, who stopped the rain,
By simple God-trusting prayer;
Three years passed, drought with it came,
He, having breathed the Lord’s air.

Mount Carmel, a site of glory,
Standing against the prophets of Baal;
The Lord by fire proclaimed His story,
For Elijah sought, by simple call.

Angel-fed, a blinding light,
Yet feared a woman’s scorn;
Indicting sin, encouraging right,
A prophet was truly born.

Fearing Jezebel’s ire,
Distraught on desert hill;
With wind, a quake and great fire,
The Lord spoke, with voice small and still.

The Lord gave him one more task,
A new prophet to be brought in;
In God’s glory, he could not bask;
Elisha’s work was to begin.

And the Lord took Elijah away
In a glorious chariot of fire;
He looked on him as one to not sway,
And held for Elijah no ire.
