“The Good & The Evil”

"No evil shall happen to you neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.
For he will give his angels charge over you, To guard you in all your ways” (Psalms 91:10-11).


There are angels among us and I believe they are real. They are often sent by God to carryout some certain duties on this Earth. The Bible often refers to them as the “one who is sent” or the “messenger”, because in fact, that is what the word angel means. As it is implied in Scripture and is found in the constant tradition of the Church, God has given each of us our very own Guardian Angel to guide us through life and to protect us when harm or evil is near. Our spirited protectors have great powers and are able to put good thoughts into our minds, as well as navigate our daily wanderings. Psalm 91:11 says: "He will command His angels about you, to guard you in all your ways." In time of temptation they can give us both light and strength. They never stop praying for us, and they present our prayers before God. Therefore, it would be wise of us to venerate our Guardian Angel, to develop a true friendship with them, to thank them, and to ask them for help. After all, when else do we each get our very own direct liaison to God? That’s almost as good as having the Lord’s hotline phone number so that we can beseech Him for help when we are in need or just simply talk to Him when we miss His company. So the Lord said to us: "Behold, I am sending an angel ahead of you, to guard you and bring you to the place I have prepared. Listen to his voice, and do not rebel against him, for My Name is in him, and he will not forgive" (Exodus 23:20-21).


As is with the Holy Trinity, an angel is a pure spirit. They have no matter and no body, yet each angel is like a person. An angel has a mind and a will like ours, except they are of a nature much higher than ours. Contrary to what believers may think, angels are not born in heaven, that is, with the vision of God. If they had that, sinning would be impossible for them to commit. And the way we know this is because we also know that along with the good angels there also exist the fallen angels. At some point in time God gave the angels some sort of command, of what we do not know, but some angels obeyed God’s command and other angels did not. Because of their disobedience, the wicked angels were condemned to eternal punishment and were cast from God’s mighty Kingdom. Thus, they came to be known as the fallen angels, or the angels of darkness, the angels of evil, the devils themselves. Unfortunately, the devils still have their great powers natural to a pure spirit. So their works too may seem like miracles to us.


As we all know, the will of the devil only knows evil. Hence, he will always try to seduce people, to harm them spiritually, and even bring them to hell. His goal is to lead us far from God’s Light of Truth, and to keep us away from the faithful service of God – never to return. And thus, it is by this that he hopes we will loose our Lord’s unconditional, generous love and gracious blessings. So, heed the advice of Saint Peter who said: “Be calm and watch, for your enemy the devil goes about seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, strong in faith, knowing that your brothers all over the world have the same trial” (1Peter 5:8-9).


In His greatness, as always, He knows how to draw goodness out of every evil; “temptation gives us the opportunity to show our faith and to trust in Him” (Rev. Most). It also gives us the chance to grow in virtue by the struggle. Thus fear not, for God has conquered all evil. He has formed for you a strong army of the heavens, that is, your Guardian Angel, the Blessed Mother, the ordinary Saints, and His battalion of faithful angels. All you need to do is pray and stay faithful in your love for God, and God’s love for you. α†Ω
