Love…Pass It On!

Wendy was just 19 years old when she arrived at the Berry House in Oklahoma City to begin work as a secretary. She had two very small children with another one on the way when her husband of nearly 3 years abandoned her for another woman. Devastated Wendy spent may days and nights crying out to God for help and comfort. Getting this job made her extremely nervous as she tried to make it on her own as a parent and as a worker.

A week before Christmas, Wendy gave birth to a healthy 61/2 pound baby girl but had no food or heat in her small, neatly kept apartment. Worried that her children would have to go hungry on Christmas Day, employees from the Department of Human Services and her co-workers came forward with food, clothing and money enough to pay the rent and utilities bills for five and a half months. Wendy was so impressed by this gesture of kindness that she thanked her co-workers, Department of Human Services, and God!

As her situation stabilized, Wendy became more comfortable in her job at the Berry House. Wendy’s co-workers learned she was kind, forgiving and compassionate. At first, the other workers thought Wendy was just being hypocritical. In time, they discovered Wendy’s good nature was genuine. Staff, residents, and parents with difficulties, tragedies or just needed comforting sought her out. Wendy’s life experiences, pain and sufferings made her empathetic towards those who also suffered such life experiences. Her smiles, good nature and generosity became a lift to everyone who she came in contact with her. Still under 20 years of age, Wendy developed into a very, very valuable employee to the Berry House work staff.

On a beautiful Fall Oklahoma afternoon, a 20 year old student from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Oklahoma visited Wendy at the Berry House. Wendy was celebrating her 30th years as an employee at the Berry House when the young pre-medical student came to visit and thank her. The young man spent a year attempting to locate Wendy. As a young child in the Philippines, he received $50 each month that provided him food, clothing and educational expenses. When this young man became a high student, he worked hard and took and attained the highest score ever observed on the American National Medical Board Examination. Wendy and her co-workers also learned that 14 others Filipino children had also received her financial support.

The young man demonstrated his thanks through his hugs and tears. Within months of his contact with Wendy, Wendy received 11 letters from those children mature enough to write her. When asked about her generosity and love for others, Wendy stated: “I had a need as a young, desperate mother who experienced love from my co-workers and the employees of the Department of Human Services. I felt God was telling me to show love, mercy, forgiveness and compassion for the least of my brothers and sisters to the best of my ability. By quietly passing the love I received I would be doing what God has commanded me to do when there is a need.”

Do you pass on God’s love when there is a need?
