Objects of Wrath

At the end of the universe lies the beginning of vengeance. In space, a battle is about to begin. A battle between good and evil. A battle between justice and vengeance. A battle between the Starship Enterprise and the wrath of Khan. For some it will be their first mission, for others it will be their last.

So the taglines read from Star Trek II (1982), The Wrath of Khan, the story of the Genesis Device, a remarkable invention that was supposed to transform desolate worlds into Class M planets inhabitable by humanoids. Designed in an unethical manner by Admiral KirkÕs ex-wife and his son, it is stolen by a genetically-engineered criminal named Khan, who has just escaped from a penal colony. Angered over the imprisonment, which he blames on Kirk, he vows revenge and pours out his wrath using the Genesis Device. To save the crew from annihilation, Spock sacrifices his life to provide the ship with the WARP speed needed to escape the destructive fury. Withering from too much radiation, Spock says, ÒThe needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.Ó To which Kirk adds, ÒOr the one?Ó
It doesnÕt take long in life to experience anger, whether our own or that which is directed toward us by another. Everybody wants a Burger King life. Nobody wants to be forced to ride in the back of the bus. Due to our inherited nature, we want to be number one. For that reason, relationships are strained and often near the brink of disaster. As the Eagles sang in The Best of My Love, ÒYou see it your way and I see it mine, but we both see it slippinÕ away. You know ?we always had each other, baby, I guess that wasn't enough.Ó From song lyrics to real life, the best of our love doesnÕt seem to be good enough in human relationships. Thank God He intervened and sent His Son to share the divine love we need.
Anger is a product of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Our sin, which is rebellion against God, has made mankind an enemy of God. We are born with an evil nature that continually rebels against God and His sovereign authority. That makes each of us an object of wrath. Since GodÕs nature demands justice, all of us deserve the fires of hell. But God, because of His mercy, has chosen to give some of us a pardon, which comes only through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. The only people who escape His wrath are His children.
Thank God He believed the needs of the many outweighed the needs of His only Son. Christ left Heaven and humbled Himself. He came here as a Servant who was dedicated to ministering to us. He came to die, as God had planned. He came to change our desolate hearts into a place habitable by the Spirit of God. His mission was to make us His own! Now, we wait for the Rapture and His Second Coming, when He will discharge pure wrath on those Left Behind. Only those who know Him will escape. Know Him, and be ready!
