Prayers
"Saying the Lord's Prayer"
“Remain in Me, as I remain in you” (John 15:2).
It is natural that when you become such good friends with someone you would want to introduce that person to your family –mainly to your parents. Though in this case the friend just isn’t any regular person and the parent isn’t any regular dad. In the same way, Jesus desired for man to know God, the Father. He also desired for man to know His Father’s love just as He knew His Father’s love, and as man knew Jesus’ love. Before Christ, humanity’s relationship with their God was one of worship and fear, Master/Lord and servant or God and man. After Moses’ generation, God promised He would renew His relationship with humanity for God Himself desired to have a much more intimate relationship with the ones who He created in His image, His children. Because of this, Christ came to earth to be the Living-Bridge which through spirit connected man to God. Thus by this Holy bond, which is first between Christ and humanity because they both share the same Holy Spirit, man thereby, is connected to God. It is by this Holy union that we are now able to call God as Father, “Abba.”
However, a heart that harbors love for a Father, must first know the Father. It is only then that the relationship would be meaningful. But for us to know our Heavenly Father, we must be given a chance, a way or a channel in which we can communicate and be with Him directly, one-on-one. And so it was, Jesus provided that channel for us it’s called a “prayer”. “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples,” a disciple of Jesus said to Him (Luke 11:1). And with that Jesus began to teach us to pray; the Prayer of the Lord.
The entire Lord’s Prayer is a testimony to the renewed, intimate relationship that man has with God. With the knowledge that our Lord longs for the closeness with us as much as we yearn for it with Him, it only seemed fitting that we follow the advice of Jesus Christ and address the God Almighty as “Abba” which means “Dad” or “Daddy” in Hebrew. For it was by the Living-Bridge’s connection through the incarnation, death and resurrection Christ we, the “friends” of Jesus, were brought to God in a whole new way and was made the beloved children of God. Thus, Christ told us to begin the prayer by calling God not just mere “Father”, but rather say to Him “Our Father,” because we have become God’s adopted children through Jesus’ body and blood.
As we grow in our relationship with God our hearts will learn to know Him no longer as Master but instead as Father. Hence, we can callout to “our Father” and “praise His name” [Our Father, Hallowed be they name], wishing for “His Kingdom to come” [Thy Kingdom come]. In the same way, it is only with the hearts of loving children that we are able to “wish for His will to be done on this earth” [Thy will be done on earth] such “as He would have it done in heaven” [as it is in heaven]. And as love grows in our hearts, so too does trust. Hence, we ask Him to “provide us with our daily needs” [give us this day our daily bread]. But because we are not perfect children, we realize that there are times when we do fault against our Father. We could only hope then that in His infinite love for us, He will be able to “forgive us of our sins” [and forgive us our trespasses]. Using His grace as an example for our actions, we in the same way learn to “forgive those who have sinned against us” [as we forgive those who trespass against us]. Then finally as trusting children, we can ask our Heavenly Father to “ward off our temptations protect us from the evil one” [and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil].
So, as we search through the darkness to find our way back to the path of Light, our “Lord’s Prayer” will move from being just beautiful words to a life-giving model of our spiritual life.
