“We’re One in God”

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,” (Colossians 3:15).


I often wonder what life would be like if we, as the human race, were able to advance ourselves to the days where we lived just as one. Instead of each individual feeling patriotism for his/her own country, we all shared the common pride of belonging to one human race. Instead of each nation racing to build the largest army, the most powerful government and the richest economy, we all raced together to build a better planet for humanity to live in. And instead of each country studying hard to discover new science, to create new technology, and to understand the metaphysical meaning of our own existence or the existence of other life forms in the vast space, we all shared our knowledge and talents to advance our own civilization.

I realize this all sounds too ideal, the thought of us all living and working to advance ourselves as one species rather than as one individual or one nation. But just imagine what if …. Would we be further along in our efforts to explore the vast outer space and its contents? Would we be closer to the days where we could all live in complete peace and blissful harmony with all of God’s creatures on this earth, with nature, with each other as well as with ourselves, and most importantly with God?

Silly as it may sound, back during the time of the disciples this very concept did exist on a smaller scale for good period of time. It was the time of the Pentecost, which was when the twelve apostles received the Holy Spirit, the “Advocate” who Jesus promised would “be with [them] always,” (John 14:16, 17). Saint Peter with the Eleven explained to all the Jews of Jerusalem the importance of seeking God while they were here on Earth so that they may be with God later in their afterlife. St. Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized … [ask] for the forgiveness of your sins; …. Save your selves from this corrupt generation," (Acts 2:38, 40). Each day thousands who accepted his message were baptized in Jerusalem.

These faithful devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the ways of the Lord, eating, praying, gathering, and general living as the Lord had desired of them. “All who believed were together and had all things in common. The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common. With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great favor was accorded them all. There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need,” (Acts 4:32-35). Thus with exultation and sincerity of heart, the total five thousand plus believers of Jerusalem gathered to pray and praised God every day. “And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved,” (Acts 2:47).

Perhaps the examples left for us in the Acts of the apostles is a little far from our reach right now. But that does not mean we can’t begin to head towards this life of idealistic peace by taking one small step at a time. For what can be better than uniting as one underneath the leadership, protection, and love of God, and doing it for God. After all, we are already all members of one special family. Hence, our first step could be that we all commit to praying each day, then in our hearts we offer up our prayers to God in one strong voice. “For where two or three have gathered together in My name, I am there in their midst," (Mathew 18: 19-20). And where ever God dwells love, peace, joy, and harmony will always prosper. For “nothing is impossible with God,” (Luke 1:37). Not even the most idealistic hope.
