I Met You
I met you and
You surprised me
with your valiant candor.
We walked briefly and swiftly
and I felt happy.
I met you and
You helped me when
why would you?
Your clear heart shined like the moon
And I felt safer.
I met you again and
Silly laughter found us.
You surprised me again
with your manner of being you.
My heart stirred a bit.
You were gone awhile and
That was that.
But I was surprised again
when I missed you as
I didn’t know you still.
I saw you at the horizon
Skipping and calling my name
And I embraced you most
carelessly, but
I was helpless against myself.
This time we paused
Speaking words of ideas
and thoughts and dreams like the stars.
You are gone again
And I wonder at myself.
I will see you again and
Perhaps often. Then I will not
Feel surprised. I will know that
I care and that no one will say
The words I love you.
Be not churned within me, Oh
My silly heart - that longs
To know all of you when
Part of you will just
Have to be enough.
