Seeking professional help, an Army Reservist on temporary military duty confided that he hated his wife and intended to divorce her. “I’m sick of her badgering me all of the time. She’s nothing but a pain in the rear. She constantly accuses me of things I’ve never had any mind to do,” he said. “I want to do whatever I can to get even with her. I’m sick of her.”

“In that case,” I told him. “I suggest, if you want to get even with her, begin showering her with compliments at least then times a day or more when you have the opportunity to do so. When she settles down, stops criticizing you, then begin the divorce actions. That will hurt her and she will never forget it.”

Roughly seven months later during our monthly drill, the husband returned to report that he had followed my suggestions. He paid compliments to his wife as well as helped her with the children, cleaned the clothes every chance he had and did other activities around the house without having to be prompted by his wife.

“Excellent!” I said. “Now is the time to begin divorce proceedings to leave your wife.

“Divorce! What!” said the young Reservist. “I really don’t want to divorce her. I’ve found she’s a pretty good woman to me and mother to the children. I can’t leave her now. I love her.”
