Lot’s wife hurried behind her fleeing husband and daughters. God had commanded them, through the angel, to leave Sodom. Leave or die, Genesis 19:15 clearly says. The messenger’s words burned in her mind. God would destroy the city. She shuddered. Would the loving God really destroy her home? What about her house, her things, her possessions? A great longing welled inside her. Overwhelmed by sorrow for her world and forgetting her fear of God’s judgment, she turned. As she beheld the destruction, her flesh became salt. Lot’s wife became a useless pillar of useful substance.
Salt is used for flavors. Imagine a soup or a potato or green beans without salt. Bland, uninteresting, tasteless. Salt adds to our lives in very useful ways as long as it is available in the shaker. When it gets clumped together, like a pillar, it is cast out and is good for nothing.
Lot’s wife was a living, breathing child of God. Her husband was the only righteous man in the city of Sodom. God gave her every opportunity to repent. His hand stretched far to her. But she turned, not to God, but to her worldly life. Because she disobeyed the command of God, God turned her into a pillar of salt. Lot’s wife had the opportunity to influence her husband for God, her children for God, and her city for God. Instead of provoking to righteousness and allowing God to use her, she provoked God to anger and was rendered useless. If she had yielded to God, He would have made her a shaker, not a pillar.
In Matthew 5:13, Jesus said, “Ye are the salt of the earth.” We are the flavor for the lives of those around us. Jesus fills our shakers with His salt and expects us to shake it out on the world. Salt flavors. Salt preserves. Christians witness. Christians smile at rudeness. Christians pray in public and in private. Christians pay attention to people around them. Christ-like people put the flavor of the Gospel and God’s Word into the world. Longingly looking at the world’s temporal pleasures make us useless pillars. We hardened. We lose our flavor. Jesus isn’t spread. Oswald Chambers in his book, My Upmost for His Highest, said, “Our Lord is dethroned more emphatically by Christian workers than by the world.” We quit shaking the salt and evolve into pillars.
The world can’t shake the salt of Christ. They don’t know Him. But they do recognize if a Christian is salty or not. One man came to visit a pastor. He spoke to the pastor’s neighbors first before entering the pastor’s home. After he was seated comfortably, the man shook his finger slowly at the pastor. “Your neighbors,” he said, “are watching you.” The pastor understood that his neighbors expected him to act like a Christian. The saltier we are, the thirstier the world will become. We have the Living Water of Christ to share. Walking close to Christ keeps our shakers filled with salt. Let Him fill you today. Let Him shake you as He likes.
