Sexual Promiscuity: An Accident?

On a mild October afternoon, a professional football player went to a local insurance office to purchase health and life insurance policies. The insurance agent asked, “Sir, have you ever had any accidents?” After about 30 seconds of reflection, the football player responded, “Nope, but a linebacker from another team punched me right in the helmet and busted my nose. In my rookie season, two years ago, a tackle dislocated my pinky toe.”

“Wouldn’t you call those accidents?” replied the agent.

“Nope!” the football player said. “Shoot, those guys did it on purpose!”

This particular story reminds me of the Bible. The events that occur to Biblical figures are never accidental. Each and every event, tale or story is designed to demonstrate who God is, His mercy, compassion, love for humankind, forgiveness as well as His willingness to redeem humankind in spite of its constant and consistent history of trying to go it alone without God. One of the best illustrations of God being with a person even though he sinned was Samson. Like so many today, Samson allowed personal pride to destroy his relationship with God. Yes, Samson was the strongest man who could destroy armies—when he had God on his side. At first, he destroyed evil in the name of God. In time, however, he became “me” involved. Samson traded his soul (his strength) for sex (personal pride). His strength was because of his relationship with God and God’s very simple commands to guide him.

Along came Deliah (sex) who took his innocence and gave it to the world. He, like many young people and adults today, are blinded by lure of sexual pleasures outside of their marriages. They think they are protected by so-called “safe sex”. They quickly discover death to what marriage they could have had and the added benefits of Sexually Transmitted Diseases—some of them that stay with them for a lifetime. All because they don’t need God in their lives and can go it alone!

In Bob DeMoss’ best selling book “Learn To Discern”, Josh McDowell who wrote the foreword to that book wrote the following, “…according to a teen sex survey in eight evangelical denominations, more than 40 percent of churched youth by age eighteen have experienced sexual intercourse… Christian young people were as sexually active as their unsaved friends.”

The shocking truth DeMoss and McDowell state is the belief that many have is that they can put a fast one over on God! Besides tossing their relationship with God out, it is reported that more than 4,000 teens and adults each day contract a Sexually Transmitted Disease or roughly 3 persons every minute of a 24 hour day!

The sex act is not filthy, dirty or nasty. It is a beautiful gift from God never to be utilized outside of a marital relationship between a man and a woman. The argument for homosexual marriage (relationship) is an abomination to God as Biblically stated on more than one occasion. It is in no way equivalent to a heterosexual relationship despite a number of countries legalization of this behavior. Human sexuality is not to be sold or compromised as a recreational or political expression as it has been utilized by many today. Human sexuality is a private affair with social consequences today as it was in past human history. Do not take this author's word on it. Read all about it in the Bible if you dare!

Recently, several organizations in their desperate attempt to derail the growing influences of abstinence before marriage message, have held a convention in Seattle, Washington titled “Screw Abstinence”. The question to teens and adults is: “Will you allow some people’s evil intents and behaviors to influence your Christian walk?” Do you know that your sin will be forgiven if you confess your sin to God? Be mindful that there will be consequences just as there were for Samson and others throughout history that thought they could put a fast one over on God! These consequences are not accident nor are they punishments from God as many suggest. The Lord allows such things for a purpose. So patiently trust Him and not the empty promises of the world. If you truly know the Lord, someday you will praise Him for it all!
