We serve a big and a mighty God. We need to be open to the big picture. Yet there is so much small thinking. Christians who are not poor using small Bibles that almost require a magnifier to read the tiny print. We need to think bigger.

We need to dream big dreams directed by the Holy Spirit that go beyond our rural community, our small town and encompass the big city, the whole world.

That wonderful old movie “South Pacific” had a song that put it beautifully: “You got to have a dream, if you don’t have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true?”

God says: “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions.” Joel 2:28.

The Lord will do it if we are open. He gave a vision to Billy Graham of preaching in outdoor meetings in enormous stadiums worldwide. Billy started in his local community around 1947 and we all know the rest.

God can take a small start and turn it into a big finish if our heart attitude is right. This writer had an article printed in a Christian newsletter that went around Australia. Then the publisher wrote to say the article had been used in a seminar in Kenya. I hadn’t pictured it, although this Internet writing is intended for reading in many countries.

So we need to look beyond the horizon. In the same way that God turns an acorn into a giant oak tree, He can multiply and magnify our initial small efforts.

Isaiah 54:2 says: “Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your habitations; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes, for you shall expand to the right and to the left…”

Arthur Blessitt had a vision. Arthur cared about the human race (which is what we should all be doing) and probably thousands were saved because of it. He carried —literally — a heavy wooden cross around the world to draw attention to Jesus. He got to the Spanish border not knowing anyone, but within a few days he was invited to preach to multitudes from a VIP balcony in the centre of Madrid.


Mother Theresa stepped off a train in India and wanted to do something about the poverty and suffering she saw. So began the work in Calcutta and news of it spread throughout the world. God took that little beginning and made it into something big.

The Apostle Paul probably had little idea that centuries later he would be revered as the greatest evangelist of all time. Paul was obedient and stuck to the task in spite of much adversity—a dreaded word for preachers nowadays.

Our God is the One who parted the Red Sea, who spoke through a donkey, who in the wilderness sent food from heaven for the Israelites. He will do big things with our small beginnings if we believe He can.

Don’t let that old line “You haven’t got the covering” ruin your dream either.
