Stephen A. Peterson

When I was a little boy, about 9 or 10 years old, my uncle Pierre was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service. At times, I would visit Uncle Pierre at his house to visit with my aunt and my cousins. On this particular day, he was doing some repair work on a wall. Scanning the situation, the work area looked like a mess. Then I told him, “Uncle Pierre this place looks like a mess.”

He simply smiled at me, looked at the wall, then said, “Stevie, you go out and play with your cousins and in a little while when I’m finished with this wall I’ll let you take a look at it. Then tell me what you think. Okay?”

“Sure,” I said and went out and played.

All during the process of repairing a wall, I would wonder why Uncle Pierre used wire, plaster, water, metal tools, paint and other item I could not name to repair a wall. It seemed much to do about nothing just to repair a little hole in the wall. “It was just a little hole anyway. Why not ignore it? Maybe no one would notice it.”

In a little while, I would hear Uncle Pierre call me in to check the finished product. To my surprise, the hole in the wall was no more. All of the tools and items to make the repairs were gone and in its place a wall with no hole, painted over as though nothing had ever happened. At first it was hard to believe as everything before appeared to be nothing more than a mess. Then Uncle Pierre said, “Generally when you are trying to build or repair something you have to put out everything you need to have so that you know what you have or don’t have and purchase it if you have to and get started. It looked messy and out of sort but it really wasn’t. What you didn’t know or understand is that I knew exactly what I wanted to do and how to do what I needed to do. I had a plan, I was just following my plan. Now that I’m finished, you’re seeing the results of my plan. Wouldn’t you agree my plan worked out okay?”

“Yes, it sure did.”

As time passed, my Uncle Pierre died. However, that moment remains as a testimony as to how we deal with God as well. How often do we ask God, “Father, what are you doing? Why are you doing this? God, this is nothing but a mess!!! You’re wrong! You don’t know what you’re doing!!!” Instead of giving us what we really deserve God will tell us if we would just stop, listen, trust in Him and follow His plan; He will make repairs in the walls of our life that WE put there.

If one stops and thinks about it, we sin daily in so many ways. Yet when the going gets tough and difficulties come, we blame God. We tell Him we deserve more money, no pain from put our hands in the fires of life, or that we deserve that new car that everyone else in our neighborhood has. In truth, we deserve NOTHING!

However, God in His wisdom, mercy and compassion tell us and me, “My child, you go out and play, do my work, and when I am finished, I will bring you to Heaven and show you the place I have prepared for you!!! How fortunate we are!
