Through the Eyes of a Nurse
I have been a nurse now for 18 years and I still love being a nurse. Being a nurse is my purpose here on earth. Sometimes I nurse people back to health and sometimes I nurse them to their death. I have had people over the years ask me how I could stand being a nurse and seeing all that death. My simple answer is, “My faith in God.”
Over the last several years, I have come to realize that what we as medical professionals do to keep some of us alive is just prolonging the suffering. Through my faith in Christ, I have realized that dying isn’t the worst thing that could happen to us. As a matter of fact, dying is the one thing that we as Christians should be looking forward to. As Christians, we should be embracing the day that we can go and be with our Father in Heaven. Jesus promised us this when He said in John 14:2 – “In my Father’s house there are many room; if it were not so I would have told you. And if I go there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
He promised us life everlasting in Heaven with Him – He did not promise us life everlasting here on this earth. In 2 Corinthians 5:1 The Bible says, “When this tent we live in, our body on earth is torn down, God will have a house in Heaven for us to live in, a home He himself has made which will last forever.”
Here is my dilemma. Through the eyes of a nurse, I am seeing that more and more of us are doing everything that is humanely possible to stay alive on this earth. We tend to have faith in modern medicine rather than faith in God and his son Jesus. I have seen so many patients whose health is very poor and yet when I ask them, if they should stop breathing or their heart should stop what do they want us to do. Almost everyone will say, do everything you can to keep me alive but I don’t want to be kept alive on one of those breathing machines. When CPR is performed, you will have a tube put down your throat and you will be connected to a breathing machine. This saddens my heart because this tells me that we really do not have faith in Jesus Christ as we claim to have. I have seen family members make their loved ones suffer because we as a society have been brain washed by modern science into thinking that we should live here on earth eternally but that is not what God has promised us. I just wish I could tell you all the horrible details that we put our loved ones through but the list is too lengthy and too horrible.
If we are truly Christians as we profess to be then we should love our loved ones enough to let them die a peaceful death when God comes and calls them home. We should love them enough to not let them suffer any more and we should not feel guilty about it either.
As Christians, we should realize that when our health is in decline and our bodies are getting worn down – then let your loved ones know that when the time comes to let you go and be with Jesus.
But all of this has to be in writing, called a Living Will or an Advanced Directive to your physician. Let your doctor know that when your heart stops or you should stop breathing that you don’t want any heroics done.
