Stephen’s Angel

Stephen is my sons’ best friend. They have been friends since they were just babies. Stephens’ mother and I have known each other since I was just 4 years old. So, I have been a friend of the family for years. When Stephen was only 16 years old, when he became a father for the first time.
Even at the young age of 16, he still loved his son very much and was a good father to his him. In January, 1999, he had an argument with his girlfriend and she had told him that he would never see his son again and this just devastated Stephen. He felt that he did not have a purpose to live if he could not see his son, so he attempted to commit suicide by taking a bunch of different pills. He was taken to the ER, had his stomach pumped out and sent home the same day. About six weeks after that, he had confided in my son about his experience that I guess we would call “near death” experience.
One day my son, Justin came to me and told me that Stephen had seen heaven when he was “unconscious”. I was skeptical because I have known Stephen since he was born and I knew that Stephen had not grow up in church and has probably very rarely even been to church in his 17 years of life let alone, read the Bible. Justin then went on to tell me about this “angel” that Stephen had seen during his unconscious state. Justin then stopped and paused and said, “But mom, this angel was strange.” He went on to explain that Stephen had said that this angel had six wings. When he told me that, I stopped what I was doing and my jaw dropped open. I immediately picked up the phone and called Stephen myself and asked Stephen to explain what it was that he had seen. He first began to explain to me that he had seen Heaven and that the grass was green, very green and when the wind blew the trees and the grass turned into a gold color. He also explained that he heard this beautiful music, like music that he has never heard before.
Of course, we’ve heard this before from others who have claimed that they have had near death experiences also, so I was still skeptical. Then, he started telling me that this angel had six wings. The bottom two wings covered the legs and feet, the middle two wings were outreached and ready to fly and the top two wings covered the face. I then asked Stephen if it was a women’s voice or a man’s voice. He replied that sometimes it sounded like a man and sometimes it sounded like a women. I then asked Stephen what this angel said to him, and he told me, “the angel told me that I could not come now.” He went onto explain that he was given a choice to go back to his family and friends and at that time he could see all of his family both dead and alive, and all of his friends. The other option he had was to go with another angel somewhere else. Stephen chose to come back to his family and friends. After I finished talking with him, I got so excited because I knew it was true. I honestly don’t know how I knew it was true but I did. I knew it was a Seraphim. I went and grabbed the Smith’s Bible Dictionary and went straight to Seraphim and there I found the definition as described in Isaiah 6:2. I quote from the dictionary, “A seraphim is a celestial being whom Isaiah beheld envision standing above Jehovah as he sat upon his throne. They are described as having each of them three pairs of wings, with one of which they covered their faces (a token of humility); with the second they covered their feet (a token of respect); while with the third they flew. Their occupation was twofold – to celebrate the praises of Jehova’s holiness and power and to act as the medium of communication between heaven and earth.” I was so excited about all of this that I just wanted to shout. There is no way that a young man who has rarely been to church, and probably never opened up the Bible could have known about that one verse hidden away in Isaiah 6:2. In the NIV Isaiah 6:2, “Above him were seraphs, each with six wings; With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.”
There is only one explanation for this, there is a God, there is a heaven and it is beautiful.
I soon sat Stephen down and explained to him who Isaiah was and that he too had the same vision about 3,000 years ago. I knew then without a doubt that there is a beautiful place for us to go after we leave this life here on Earth. So why is it then that we, as Christians, still fear death? In John 14:1-7 Jesus was talking with his disciples and he tells them, “Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father’s House are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself: that where I am, there you may be also.” Thomas said, “Lord, we do not know where you are going, so how can we know the way.” Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth, and the Life. No one comes to my Father except through me…”
That particular day in January 1999, Stephen was not allowed to come now because he had not accepted Jesus as his savior, and it was not his time.
