HELP NOT YOURSELF BUT OTHERS

When a neighbour asks for help what do you say? Do you make all kinds of noble gestures but then find some excuse or reason why you can't help? Or are you like a neighbour of mine who says, "I'll be back", but then disappears for a week or two? For those of us who follow the Christian faith the idea of helping others is not something new. Jesus very clearly instructed us to "do for others as you would have them do for you" Matthew 7:12) and to "love your neighbour as you love yourself"(Mark 12:31). This simply means that we look out for others even if it means putting our own needs second.

We have all heard the expression: "What comes around goes around" If we are harsh and refuse to offer assistance, we may find ourselves treated in a similar fashion. Helping a neighbour may be as simple as driving that person on an errand, offering to shop for him when he is sick, or looking after his house and garden if he is away. Or we might offer spiritual support by showing willingness to listen to that person's problems or providing comfort in times of sorrow or loss. Helping others is a small investment but its rewards are great. Jesus, who healed the sick, and turned water into wine at a wedding celebration, led us by example.

So when a neighbour approaches you for a favour, don't decide you cannot fulfill the request even before you know what it is. Listen to his need with an open mind and heart. Think of all the wonderful things God has given you. Being there for others is a small way in which you can repay God for all you have received.
