I gazed in the mirror at my reflection.
Seeking signs of the girl I had been.
A wrinkle crossed my brow in stark detection.
No trace of the girl from way back when.

Sorrow and pain had etched my features,
and each line had a story to tell.
They told of hard knocks as my teacher,
and the pain when dreams set sail.

I had to bid farewell to my best friend.
A lonely house, without him, to dwell.
Trusting that in time, my heart would mend.
So I cried when my dreams set sail.

My child decided to walk away from me.
Told me that as a mother, I had failed.
My love for her, not allowed to be.
And with those words, another dream set sail.

Though life has been a series of tears and pain,
God has given me my share of joy.
He divided the mixture of sunshine and rain,
and His peace, to my soul, employs.

He never allows more than we can bear,
and in Heaven, all hurt will pale.
Until then, I rest in His loving care;
and let Him hold me, in case more dreams set sail.

I know that Heaven awaits me.
No more parting from those I hold dear.
That little girl, once more I will be;
when the sails of my dreams reappear.
