There's a little "i am" inside of me
Which mostly manages to hide,
Yet wants what it wants and when, you see--
And will not be denied!

I've grown accustomed to this little i am,
I don't bother it within,
But the things it seeks with loud demand--
Are things that hurt me and cause me to sin!

There are times when I so want to do
Something my heart and mind agree
Is good--yet i am has a will there too,
And somehow gets the best of me!

At times I'd like to throw wide the door,
All of the windows, and just be me--
Let in the light and the air, and more--
Just once I'd really feel like I'm free,

But that i am goes pulling all the blinds,
Slams shut the door and glowers my way--
Somehow a reason he always finds
To keep the place dark and avoid the day.

It seems I'm never free to just do right,
Live by my conscience like I should--
Although little i am stays out of sight
He seems to have a grip on me for good.

But what is this? I've just heard another voice,
There's another "I Am" calling to me--
He tells me that I now have a choice,
From little i am I can be free!

This other I AM is good and he's great,
Far greater than self, or little i am,
At my own heart's door he awaits,
He looks like a lion, yet speaks like a lamb--

When he enters in, so does the light,
All darkness and every sin goes,
I know I'll love him with all of my might--
That little i am can start packing his clothes!
