When I was about 10 or 11, a 'friend' convinced me I should jump
out of a tree with an umbrella to see if it would work like a
parachute. Some friend! He heartily laughed while I almost broke
two legs.

When you are a kid, friends come and go, but the really good ones
last a lifetime. Like some of you, we are at the age where we say
"goodbye" to friends more thoughtfully than we used to, especially
when we go North once a year. It is realistic to think that for some
(including us) it may be a last goodbye. So it gets harder not to
choke up.

Sometimes, really good friends are hard to find, and when you
have one, you really cherish them. Stocks, Bonds, and Money may
come in handy, but when you are in real need, nothing beats a good
friend! Perhaps we need to tell our friends more often how grateful
we are for them.

We read in Prov. 17:17 (nlt), "A friend is always loyal, and a
brother is born to help in time of need." -- that includes Christian
brothers and sisters born into the family of God. In Prov. 18:24, it
also says, "There are 'friends' who destroy each other, but a real
friend sticks closer than a brother." That's the kind I want. That's
the kind I'd like to be. How about you?
