Who was he, that man on the cross
Whose the gain and whose the loss?

Rough hands holding him down
Hands that made a cruel crown.

Now the hammer ready too...

"Father forgive them,
They know not what they do."

The ringing of pain with each heavy blow,
Yet his eyes somehow show

Forgiveness also rings
And mercy boundless sings!

Above them all a darkening glow,

While men cower
And creation droops low...

Son of God and Son of Man

Bridges heavan and earth
On a wooden span.

As earth rends, the Savior died

And freedom flowed down
From his side.
