What Terri Shiavo Has Shown Us as a Nation

The controversy over the impending death of Terri Schiavo has shown us three things about ourselves collectively as a nation:

I. As much as many wanted to help save her life, sometimes law and its practice gets in the way of what is right?

The choices we have made in our voting for judges and allowed to be placed in office has eroded our national conscience. Can you imagine this scenario happening in the '40's or '50's? I cannot! This decline has not happened all at once but gradually as we allowed what is wrong to supercede what is right for too long. It can be likened to a tug-of-war. We have allowed politics to dictate who is in a certain position rather than the person with the best values to decide the direction our country is to take now and in the future.

II. Terri has shown us we are on a downward slide to allow such a thing to happen to her.

We used to be a "nation under God" but we are fast becoming a "nation under judgement". As a nation God will judge us if we do not set right the things that let this debacle happen. God is patient, loving, and long-suffering--but there is still a limit to what God will allow to continue to happen. God is the attributes mentioned above, but He is also a God of justice.



III. The remedy!
II Chronicles 7:14 "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land." (NIV)
