Out of the Ashes


Out of the ashes,
After the last ember extinguishes its flame,
Comes the moment of greatest sacrifice;
When, in our humanity,
Riddled with our deepest pain and grief,
We seek to raise up our fallen
Hopes and dreams.

Out of the ashes
I see what the spring showers
Have done to my desires
As they meet their final demise;
I long to reach down and resurrect them
From their resting place at my feet,
But I know what happens to our ill-conceived plans.
They, too, become ashes,
Or worse, turning into waking nightmares
Rocking the soul like waves that
Pummel the shoreline during an angry storm.

From the ashes
Can spring our fondest desires.
Resurrected from the rubble around our feet,
We can experience the joy
Of seeing the Father's out-stretched hand
Raise up that which was dead
Into newness of life.
More important than His love for us
In the temporal things,
God gave us His Son,
Who died and was risen
Out of the ashes unto Life eternal
To save all who believe in Him.
