This Shade of GREEN
By: Gloria Tiquia
St. Patrick’s Day reminds me of predominantly green environment – green creatures roaming around the wilderness, spring’s sprouting green grass, precious stones of emerald, and who can miss the color of money?
But there’s a shade of green that’s one of the deadly sins – ENVY. It is synonymous to jealousy. It can ruin many relationships.
But like any unruly beasts, envy can be tamed. First, admit that you’re envious. Being aware of the problem is the first step to finding the right solutions. I know once in awhile I’ll ask myself “Why can’t I be rich and famous like Oprah?”
Perhaps you’ve wondered to yourself why that co-worker who has less abilities was promoted ahead of you. Or you may have been jealous of someone’s talents that you tend to be cynical of this particular person out of your own insecurity. Envy happens everywhere- at home among relatives, at work among co-workers, at school, even at the house of worship. It’s part of our human nature . Yet it’s ugly and something needs to be done about it. The godly way.
Refer to the Word of God. The Bible is never outdated. Its richness and wisdom is as fresh as the early morning dew. It gives us colors of hope and provides us with fresh insights everyday. I find this as true and effective as I struggle with my own human weaknesses. God is the Source of wisdom. He is our strength.
Proverbs 14:30 says, “A heart of peace gives life to the body, but envy rot the bones.”
Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 13:4 , that love does not envy.
Next time you find yourself green with envy, don’t be color-blind anymore. Fix your eyes upon Jesus.
Amen!
