More Than Adequate

A few years ago, Terri, our youngest daughter, went off happily to her second day of pre-school with a dollar bill in her little purse to pay for her lunch. When she returned home that afternoon, her mother asked her how her day in pre-school went and what she ate for lunch. “No, I didn’t eat lunch,” she replied, bursting into tears. “Mommy my lunch was 75 cents and I only had one dollar!”

How frequently have we/me responded to life’s challenges with the same childish understanding? It is written in the Bible that God has given humankind everything we need at our disposal—more than we actually will ever need! Yet because humankind is too proud, fearful, and, more often than not, reluctant to do anything about it, we tend to blame God for not giving us what we need. This appears to be the case even though we have been assured that God has provided humankind with every blessing if we would just ask and be patient.

St. Paul the Apostle stated in his letter to the Corinthians (2 Cor 9:8) that we are given grace to accomplish the things God has called us to do. That is, regardless of what one is called to do—visit someone in prison; be an example to an angry teen, or to comfort a spouse whose lifelong companion has just died. So when are we going to be thankful for what we have rather than demand of God more and more?
