***The Closet! ***

Nearly seven years ago, Our daughter Amy had just been born. She was born three months premature and was in the hospital (That’s a whole other story I’ll write about another time). Anyway, it was during this stressful time that I decided I didn’t like the shelving in our walk-in closet.

I decided I was going to rebuild those closet shelves the “right” way!

I tore out the old shelves and with an idea in my mind, headed to Home Depot for the necessary supplies.

I got back to the house and proceeded to build the most beautiful shelves you’ve ever seen. Shelves that would make Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor proud.

The finished closet promised to provide lots more storage space and Elaine, my wife, was really impressed!

I went on about my business, while Elaine filled the new closet shelves with clothes and boxes and all sorts of things you find on closet shelves.

I was upstairs when I heard the CRASH and SCREAM! I ran downstairs to see Elaine lying in a pile of rubble (at least that’s what it looked like). My beautiful closet shelves had torn away from the walls and fallen in on my wife!

Like I mentioned before, this was a stressful time in our lives, so that put me over the edge! I blew up! I screamed and yelled and hit things. I said things that would make a sailor blush! As Elaine would tell you, if there were ever a time in our marriage when we would have gotten a divorce, that was it!

I was so mad about “my” shelves; I didn’t even bother to ask if Elaine was okay. Fortunately for me she was okay, but “my” shelves were ruined.

After I calmed down, I surveyed the damage. I found that I had failed to anchor the shelves to the wall properly. The way I secured the shelves they couldn’t hold a fraction of the weight they were designed to.

I had to admit my stupidity and ask forgiveness for my actions from Elaine and God. Elaine and I are still married today so I guess my apology took.

I ended up rebuilding the shelves all over again. This time, I anchored them so well that I could park my car on them.

In Luke 6:46-49 Jesus talks about the wise and foolish builders. The wise builder built his house on the rock. When the storms came the house stood firm. The foolish builder built his home on the sand. When the storms came, his house fell.

If we will learn to anchor our lives in the Cross of Christ and not in the things of this world, we will be able to stand firm when the storms, trials and troubles of our lives come about.

My prayer is that we will build on the right foundation and stand firm.
