Poetry
I see them all around me; they come in many shades; they walk around like zombies, their minds in a foggy haze. They try to act happy, and like everything is cool, but in order to get that message, you'd be a real fool. They dress like their public property, they paint their faces black. The depth of their hatred would give you a heart attack.
What I try not to see is what they really look like. I try not to let my depth perception go beyond their clothes; if I did, I'd see a kid that no one really knows. I'd see their pain and suffering. I'd see their hurt and grief. And then I'd feel guilty and give them some relief. If I ever dared to look beyond their purple hair, I'd see that it was just an outward sign that they needed someone to care.
I go to school with these kids; I see them at my work, but when I'm with my friends, my Christian responsibilities I shirk. I don't do evil things like them, and that's all very well, but my unconcerned silence is damning them to hell. I try not to think about all these things, as I kick back, relax, and ignore their silent screams...
This is a poem that I wrote while I was still in High-school. While it may seem very cynical, it is only a reflection of the careless apathy found deep within my heart of hearts when I come face to face with lost young people. I think that if each of us were to search our souls, we would find some of this same cynicism mirrored there. The truth is, people are lost; the world is driving in the fast lane to destruction, and we would rather not care. It is one thing to be able to comprehend that this is a problem in our own hearts, but it is an entirely different matter to be able to remedy it. With God's power readily available to us, the question to be asked is, "what in heaven's name are we going to do about our passivity?" Each of us can only individually answer God as He asks us that question.
Oh Lord,
change our hearts!

Wow, this really hit home. My son is one of those rebels, pushing the envelope, just daring a reaction from others. He says he wants to express his individuality; I say it's a cry for be accepted for who he is, not what he looks like or how he dresses. I'm so impressed that you saw, and were convicted by, the truth. May God bless you richly and your spiritual sensitivity! Thank you for wanting to reach out to others. I read your profile and am so glad you are following God's calling. I'll pray for you! Thank you also for reviewing my article!!!
