Dearest Daughter,

I took you to get your “real” driver’s licenses just hours ago. As I sat there waiting for you to return, I began to let my mind wander back to the past few years. Those endless memories of you and your brother growing up sure seem to have passed quickly now that I have the chance to think about it. You are 18 and your brother is 21. WOW! Somehow, I feel like the largest portion of my job as your mom is done now, figuratively speaking. Once a mother, always a mother, I know. However, all the fears about whether you will turn out all right are, right now, lifting off my shoulders and being put onto yours like the changing of the guards. Now that you are “of age”, I am confident that you are ready to learn how to fly like an eagle on your own. My only advice to you right now is: Keep a sharp eye out for the walls that are sure to come in your life BEFORE they are able to smash your beak and more!

Seriously, years ago, when you two were little, I asked the Father to help me instill two main foundational principles into your lives. First, that you would have a healthy self-esteem. I had learned myself that if you do not have love and respect for yourself, then you will not allow others, including God, to show it to you. What you do not possess within, you cannot give out to others, so God allowed me to go through His self-esteem class first. Second, I wanted to teach you two that a loving and actively growing relationship with God, the Father, was a necessity throughout your lifetime. There were many opportunities along the way for you to have seen this necessity at work in my life. I was able to show you the good, the bad, and the ugly whether I wanted to or not. Now, I feel consoled by the fact that you have seen for yourselves that God is always there working even when we think we have failed Him miserably. God’s love and grace is truly big enough to handle all we offer up to Him in humble obedience.

I am so proud of you and your brother. In the days to come, I am not only going to think of you as my children, but even more, I am choosing to think of you as my friends and fellow believers in the Kingdom of God. I am a very blessed woman! Whatever else you choose to do with your life from now on will be between you and your Heavenly Father. But always remember this: You have already earned the right to be called an overcomer in Christ Jesus and in the eyes of your “Mom”.

Always and forever,

MOM
