Winter winds howl
Like generals marshaling their troops
Drifts march to their mad cadence
Across frozen fields and plains
Frigid waves of the sea
Blindly follow enraged gales
Like a runaway army
Whose hypnotic beauty
Masks certain death
Icy fingers extend frosty claws
Gripping the earth with experienced confidence
Nature bows to the bitter ferocity
Bringing the folly of summer to its knees
Mighty oaks shrink back from the
Sharp edge of its chilling blade

Stony sentinels remain
Leaderless and abandoned
As their commanders seething breath
Is finally spent
Once proud, majestic and cruel
Dirty snow bones lie in some ditch
On a forgotten country road

Winters last soiled champion
Melts slowly and unwillingly
Under springs playful elfish kiss
Promising a brutal return
