The soft edges of my shadow
Barely contain the cacophony of sounds
Of things that trail behind
The best and worst of me
Silhouettes that forged my life
The fingerprints of too many encounters
Fond memories and regrets
Roots from seeds I'm still
trying to dig up
My yesterdays pile up and collide
"It's over there! No there!"
Someplace better than here
Harvesting decisions from long ago
Feverishly I plant new hopes and dreams
Painfully aware that I reap what I sow
Chasing comfort, or at least my perception of it
Entertaining illusions of grandeur
Haggard facades and trite masks
Conceal a wounded boy with the skin of a man

Faith inspires a cross and a hill
And the sound of a hammer striking steel
Where my shadows and fingerprints will taunt me no more
They hang broken and silent
Impaled
