God’s Map

In December, 2004, I was driving in southeastern Oklahoma along State highway 9 in a part of the state I hadn’t visited in some time. Referring often to my road map, I just knew I was on the right road. However, when I didn’t reach my destination after about twenty minutes or so, I drove into the first gasoline quick stop I came to to ask for directions.

“Sir, here is where I am and I want to go to this town,” I told the cashier pointing to a location on the map.

“Oh, yes, I see,” he responded. “Friend, you’re using a map that is out of date. That stretch of roads has been re-numbered, new roads constructed.” Taking out a new updated map, he gave me the corrected route to get me to where I wanted to go.

My adventure on the Oklahoma highway made me recall criticism by an avowed atheist. He had no appreciation for Christianity or Christ. In this person’s view, Christianity offers nothing to modern humankind. He criticized Christian principles found in the Bible to be out of date, unclear and difficult for the common human to understand.

I asked him if humankind should throw out mathematical principles, biologic information or systems of measurement. “Why no!” he responded.

“Why, mathematical principles, for the most part, are old, unclear and difficult for the common human to understand as are biologic information and systems of measurement.”

“Because they are still useful,” responded my atheist associate and friend.

Likewise, the truth of God’s word is unchanging and the principles cross cut time. The important thing is that we reach out spiritual destination. Whether a person gets there using re-worded principles with slight changes or old wording is immaterial. Minor adjustments for linguistic variations pose no problems for the Bible. God’s map for obtaining eternal life, by faith, is consistent, reliable and valid for those traveling along His highway of salvation.
