“Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for the one who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8, NASB)
Many believers today live under a mixture of Old and New Covenant thinking. They try to keep rules, follow regulations, or strive for practical holiness through willpower. But the New Covenant offers something far better.
In Romans 13:8-10, Paul lists several of the Ten Commandments and then declares that love fulfills them all. He writes, “Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law” (v. 10). Love is the spirit — the very heart and intent — behind every command of God.
Jesus fulfilled the entire law for us. Through His one offering, He has perfected us forever and sanctified us once for all (Hebrews 10:10, 14). Our old self was crucified with Christ. We are now righteous, holy, and complete in Him. The flesh with all its failures has been dealt with at the cross. We are not trying to become what we already are in Christ.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16, NASB)
Walking by the Spirit is not complicated. It is walking in love — love for God and love for others. When we abide in Christ and let His love flow through us, we naturally do not lie, cheat, harm, or covet. The fruit of the Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — is simply love in action (Galatians 5:22-23).
Good works and right living are never the root of our salvation. They are the fruit that grows from resting in the finished work of Jesus. We do the next right thing not to earn God’s favor, but because we already have it.
Today, instead of striving under rules, simply yield to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to fill you with His love. Love God with all your heart. Love your neighbor as yourself. As you walk in this love, you fulfill the heart of God’s will.
Prayer: Father, thank You that in Christ I am already sanctified and perfected forever. Help me today to walk by Your Spirit by walking in love. Let Your love flow through me to others so that I naturally do what pleases You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
The New Covenant of Grace is the answer. It is finished! We are already righteous, holy, and sanctified in Christ. Rest in His completed work and walk in the Spirit of love.
