Senior Saints, Attaining a Long Life

 God doesn’t guarantee a long life, but he gives instructions on how to attain a long life. Hebrews 11, the Faith chapter of the Bible, lists Heroes of the faith  – some with a long life, some with a shorter life.  Stephen died as a martyr at a young age. (Acts 7). And so did all the apostles, except John, who lived into his 90’s.  Moses lived until age 120 (Deuteronomy 34:7 KJV); Joshua lived until age 110 (Joshua 24:29 KJV); David died at a “good old age” after ruling for 40 years (1 Chronicles 29:27-28);  The godly king, Josiah, died in battle at a young age, after refusing to heed God’s warning (2 Chronicles 35:20-25).

Therefore, God does give instructions that may help us lead a long life.  Proverbs 10:27 tells us that “the fear of the Lord prolongeth days.”  Thus, a proper respect for and obedience to Him extends our days.  “What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?  Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.  Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.”  (Psalm34:12-14 KJV)  If you want a long, good life, watch your tongue, don’t speak evil things, and don’t deceive. Stay away from evil actions or evil people. Be a peacemaker, not a troublemaker.  Set your love upon the Lord, and He will satisfy you with a long life (Psalm 91:14-16 KJV) 

Whether young or old, it is our responsibility to lead godly lives.  “For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord: whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. (Romans 14:8 KJV)
