#13 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series

Ecclesiastes 12 is a chapter warning young people to remember their Creator in the days of their youth. It portrays, in poetic language, the frailties and difficulties of old age, such as dimming vision, loss of hearing, teeth problems, and weakness of arms and legs. It urges young people to enjoy the blessings of life while they are young.  Finally, it tells young people to fear God and keep His commandments. It is your duty, and God will judge every work.

But to us who have reached the winter of our lives, there is still beauty and fruitfulness as we demonstrate a sweet, godly character. We have had years to develop this character and have been changing into the image of Christ over the years. Psalm 92:14 declares that we can still bring forth fruit in old age.

God has designed some flowers that demonstrate His ability to bring beauty in the cold, adverse climate of winter. The Algerian Iris sends up delicate, fragrant lilac flowers in late winter.  Camellias are evergreen shrubs that produce glossy leaves and white, pink, or red rose-like flowers in mild climates.  The cyclamen grows butterfly-like pink, red, and white flowers, blooming through winter into spring. And, there are many other flowers that bloom through the winter.   Proper preparation and care will generate these flowers.

Could it be that God created these flowers to exhibit to us His ability to generate beauty and fruitfulness in senior saints?   In the winter of your life, take care and effort to develop beauty and fruit that will bring glory to our Lord and Savior.
