Threescore and Ten or Fourscore

#9 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series

“The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.  So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.  (Psalm 90:10, 12 KJV)

If you happen to fall into this bracket (ages 70s and 80s), you are blessed!  I happen to fall into the 80-plus bracket and feel blessed with an extra 14 years of grace.  I observed many friends around me who died in their early eighties.  In my own church, there have been several in my age bracket who have passed away in just the past year. I am blessed to still be here. 

Instead of lamenting about what abilities we don’t have at this age, why not praise the Lord for what we do have! 

If you can still see and hear, walk (even with the aid of a cane or a walker), you are immensely blessed.  If you are able to go to church, go shopping, or visit relatives and friends, you are blessed.  If you are able to live in and keep your own house, you are blessed!  You probably have a phone and a TV that keep you in contact with the outside world.  Early in my ministry, I would often go to visit a bedfast man, probably in his 70’s.  I didn’t go to cheer him up. He cheered me up and lifted my spirits.  His nickname was “Lucky. He was saved, and he wanted to praise the Lord.

Take inventory of what you do have and thank the Lord.  Then determine what you can still do to minister to and for the Lord.
