Strong in Old Age

Moses was 80 years old when God directed him to lead Israel out of Egypt.  When he died at age 120, “his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” (Deuteronomy 34:7 KJV).  Joshua was about 80 when he led in the conquest of the Promised Land. Caleb was 85 when he boldly asked, “Give me this mountain.”  (Joshua 14:7-12). These men were the exception, not the rule, for Moses wrote in Psalm 90:10, “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, - - - it is soon cut off, and we fly away.”

David wrote in Psalm 39:5, “Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee.”

 We all know that age diminishes our strength.  We will not live forever. So, what can we do in old age?

The aged man Simeon was looking for the Lord’s Christ (Luke 2:25-26). Anna, an 84-year-old widow, “served God with fastings and prayers night and day.” (Luke 2:37). John, the apostle, was probably over 90 years old when he wrote the book of Revelation.

The Bible never mentions retirement.  We are to serve the Lord until He calls us home.  Like Simeon looking for Christ’s first coming, we need to always be looking for the Rapture and Christ’s Second Coming.  Like Anna, we can serve God with fastings and prayer.  God needs millions of prayer warriors.  Through much persecution, John continued teaching and preaching until his exile to Patmos, where he wrote the book of Revelation.

Regardless of our age, this verse applies:” And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23).
