Some melodies quietly remain with us long after the music ends. They linger in memory, returning years later with unexpected emotional force,  reminding us not only of a song or a film, but of who we once were when we first heard them.

Recently, I revisited the romantic love theme from Ode to Billy Joe, composed by the gifted French composer Michel LeGrand. The music is gentle, reflective, almost fragile in tone. Listening again after many years, I found myself transported back to another season of life, youth, innocence, and moments now softened by time.  Like many viewers, I did not realize at the time how deeply this performance and its music would remain with me across the decades.

As a young man, I greatly admired actor Robby Benson, who starred in the film. The film itself remains a quiet and thoughtful portrayal of youth, loss, and unanswered questions that continue to resonate years later.

He was extraordinarily talented,  a performer who could act, sing, and play both piano and guitar. Many admired his striking baby-blue eyes and sincere screen presence, qualities that gave his performances an authenticity rarely seen. There was a quiet vulnerability about him that made audiences feel they were watching someone real rather than merely a character.

I remember seeing Benson in films such as One-on-One, Ice Castles, Harry and Son, and especially The Death of Richie, a powerful made-for-television movie that left a deep impression on me. His roles often portrayed young men searching for identity, purpose, and belonging, themes that resonate with many of us as we navigate our own journeys through life.

In Ode to Billy Joe, Benson’s character ultimately dies, and perhaps that is why Michel LeGrand’s haunting melody carries such gentle melancholy. Music possesses a mysterious power. It can awaken happiness or sadness, depending on how it becomes anchored to a particular memory or time period. A single melody can suddenly carry us decades into the past,  reminding us where we lived, who surrounded us, and what life felt like when the future still seemed wide open.

If there were one actor I would like to meet before he or I leave this earth, it would be Robby Benson. I do not know where he stands spiritually, but life has a way of shaping the human heart through both joy and suffering. He has endured personal loss, including the passing of close family members. He has also faced serious medical struggles related to the heart defect he was born with, experiences that bring anyone face-to-face with life’s fragility.

Sometimes hardship becomes the very instrument God uses to draw a person toward deeper reflection. Trials have a way of gathering the scattered experiences of a lifetime and forcing us to ask questions that comfort and success alone rarely inspire: Why am I here? What truly matters? What remains when applause fades and time moves on?

Yet alongside sorrow, life also brings blessings. Benson has shared a long marriage with actress and singer Carla DeVito,  a reminder that enduring love and companionship remain among life’s greatest gifts. Human life, much like music itself, often weaves beauty and sadness together into a single composition.

The film itself grew out of Bobby Gentry’s haunting 1967 Southern folk ballad, a song many remember hearing on the radio decades ago. I can still picture those days growing up with my aunt and uncle in the Bay Area, listening to music on a small transistor radio as melodies drifted through warm California afternoons. Back then, music seemed to slow time. Ordinary moments felt meaningful, even before we understood why certain songs stirred reflection or quiet longing within us.

Melodies fade. Films end. Years pass quickly. Yet the reflections they awaken gently remind us that our lives, too, are part of a greater story, one fully understood only in the light of eternity.
