#6 in “Blessing for Senior Saints” series

Wisdom should be characteristic of old age. Job makes this statement in Job 12:12-13 (KJV): “With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. With him is wisdom and strength, he hath counsel and understanding.” But Elihu makes this somewhat contrary statement in Job 32:8-9, “But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.  Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.”

In the December 16, 2023, issue of Sword of the Lord, Sunshine for Seniors, I read these three cautionary prayers for Seniors.

“Keep me from becoming talkative and from the habit of thinking that I must say something on every occasion.”

“Release me from the craving to straighten out other people’s affairs.”

“Teach me that occasionally, it is possible that I may be mistaken.”

But after those cautions, God still wants to use the wisdom of elderly folks to help others.

Check out your wisdom with the Word of God. “I have more understanding than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation.”  (Psalm 119:99).  Is your wisdom based on and aligned with God’s Word? “I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.”  (Psalm 119:100). “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Psalm 119:105). “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” (Proverbs 9:10).  True wisdom is gained through study and obedience to God’s Word.

Use your Bible-based wisdom to humbly help younger folks and also to encourage and build up other senior saints.
