As Judith and Dina grabbed three blankets and wrapped two of them around themselves, Paul made the popcorn and the hot chocolate. When he came into the living room, he built a good fire in the fireplace. He sat down on the couch between the two girls and wrapped himself in the remaining blanket. Just as he was about to turn on the television, the electricity went out!
Dina was frightened. She had a feeling that a major thunderstorm was on the way. Cuddling close to her older brother, she said, "Paul, I'm scared. I have a feeling we're going to have lightning and thunder any minute." Sure enough, loud thunder rumbled outside. Lightning flashed across the night sky. "Paul!" Dina shrieked. Terror was causing tears to come to her eyes. She buried her face in Paul's shirt and started to cry.
"Come here," Paul said softly. He gently lifted his little sister onto his lap and held her tightly against his chest. There wasn't much they could do when the electricity was out, so Paul decided to put his little sister to sleep so that she would get enough rest that night. "It'll be OK," he whispered. "Just relax. Close your eyes."
Dina closed her eyes.
Paul continued to whisper. "Storms often make a lot of noise. They seem very awful and frightening when they're happening, but when they're over, you see a beautiful rainbow like the one God made for Noah and his family after the Great Flood. Beautiful new plants bloom. You see, God is gardening His beautiful world when it rains. God uses storms to make the beautiful grass, flowers, and trees grow. In other words, God uses storms, which often seem scary, to bring beautiful new things into the world."
