Devotional #33 in 2 Peter

“And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation” )2 Peter 3:15 KJV).

Earlier in this chapter (3:9), Peter had reminded the believers that the Lord is not slack concerning His promised return, but, rather, He is long-suffering.  It may seem that He is delaying His coming, but the seeming delay is because God is not willing that any should perish, but rather, that they come to repentance.

Now, this is how to think (account for) about the seeming delay.  It is our time to reason that God wants us to use this time to bring more men, women, boys, and girls to salvation.  It is both a motivation and an admonition to use this time for evangelism.  It is an opportunity for us to turn people to the Lord.  Paul expressed it like this: “Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.”  (1 Corinthians 15:34).

We may be tempted to think and wish for the Lord to come today and rapture us out of the chaos, confusion, hatred, and violence of today.   We are to be watching, waiting, and longing for His coming.  Yet, Scripture teaches that things will get much worse as we approach the day of His Coming. (2 Timothy 3:1-14 and other Scriptures).  As unsaved people become embroiled in fear, we have the answer for them in Jesus Christ.  “God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord.”  (2 Timothy 1:7-8).
