Are Generational Curses Still in Effect for Believers in Jesus Christ?

One of the most common teachings in certain charismatic and deliverance ministries is the idea that Christians can still be oppressed or tormented by “generational curses” inherited from the sins of their ancestors. This belief is usually supported by quoting Exodus 20:5, Exodus 34:7, Numbers 14:18, and Deuteronomy 5:9, where God describes Himself as “visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me.”

But does this principle still apply to those who have trusted in Jesus Christ and been redeemed from the curse of the Law? The New Testament gives a clear and decisive answer: No. Believers in Christ are completely set free from the curse of the Law, and because the curse of the Law is the root and fountainhead of every lesser curse (including any supposed generational curse), the child of God no longer lives under any form of curse—generational or otherwise.

1. The Curse of the Law Is the Source of All Curses

Paul writes in Galatians 3:13–14 (NASB):

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’—in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we would receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”

Notice the comprehensive language: Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law. The Law pronounced curses for disobedience (see Deuteronomy 28:15–68), and those curses encompassed every imaginable calamity—poverty, sickness, oppression, family breakdown, and even the perpetuation of iniquity across generations (Ex. 20:5). When Christ became a curse for us on the cross, He exhausted the entire curse that the Law could ever pronounce against us.

2. The Old Testament “Visiting Iniquity” Principle Has Been Superseded

The verses about God visiting iniquity on the third and fourth generations always appear in the context of the Mosaic covenant and are immediately qualified in the very same passages:

Exodus 20:5–6 (NASB)

“…visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”

Ezekiel 18:20 (NASB) makes it even clearer under the Old Covenant itself:

“The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.”

But the New Covenant goes infinitely further. Through the blood of Christ, God promises:

Jeremiah 31:34 & Hebrews 8:12; 10:17 (NASB)

“For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

When God no longer remembers our sins—neither ours nor our fathers’—there remains no legal basis for any curse to be “visited” upon us.

3. New Testament Declarations That Believers Are Free from Every Curse

• Galatians 3:13 (quoted above) – redeemed from the curse of the Law.


• Colossians 2:13–15 (NASB)

“He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”

• Romans 8:1 (NASB)

“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

• 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NASB)

“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.”

If there is no condemnation and the entire “certificate of debt” has been canceled, there can be no lingering generational curse with any judicial or spiritual authority over a believer.

4. What About Patterns of Sin or Demonic Oppression in Christian Families?

The Bible is realistic: sinful patterns, addictions, and even demonic influence can be passed down in families through natural (upbringing, culture, trauma) and sometimes supernatural means. But these are consequences and strongholds, not judicial “curses” that have covenantal authority over a blood-bought child of God.

Paul gives the remedy in 2 Corinthians 10:4–5 (NASB):

“For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God…”

Believers are called to renounce inherited lies, repent of personal and family sin, and stand in the authority they already possess in Christ—no special “breaking off” ritual is needed beyond the finished work of the cross.

5. Conclusion: The Cross Broke Every Curse

When Jesus cried, “It is finished” (John 19:30), the entire curse—root and branch—was swallowed up in His substitutionary death. The moment a person trusts in Christ, they pass immediately from death to life, from curse to blessing, from the old creation to the new.

Proverbs 26:2 (NASB) gives the final word:

“Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, so a curse without cause does not alight.”

For the believer, there is no cause remaining. Christ became the cause, bore the curse, and removed it forever.

Therefore, there are no Bible verses in the New Testament that teach or even imply that generational curses continue to have power over those who are in Christ. On the contrary, every relevant passage declares the exact opposite: the believer has been fully, finally, and irrevocably set free.

You are not under a generational curse. You are under the blessing of Abraham. You are in Christ, and in Him there is no curse—only unending favor.

6. Why Satan wants You to Believe you are still under a Curse of any Kind

As a believer you should know that we are no longer under the law but under grace where sin can have no dominion over us.

For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under the Law but under grace. Rom 6:14

Yet Satan wants believers to think they are still under the law and the ensuing curse, because sin gets it's power from the law.

The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the Law; 1 Cor 15:56

So, don't you think Satan wants you to believe you are still under a curse? In this case a generational curse? Absolutly he does. And if you believe you are, you could be making it happen. 

“Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.”  Jesus in Matthew ...8:13...
