Devotional #27 in 2 Peter

 “This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Savior:” (2 Peter 3:1-2 KJV).

Peter is speaking against the backdrop of the prophets who have written, preached, and prophesied of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection.  He reminded believers that they were redeemed with the precious blood of Christ and were born again through the incorruptible seed of the Word of God.  He has taught in 1 Peter how to be victorious in suffering and warned about the persecution of Christians.  In 2 Peter 1, he told of the more sure word of prophecy  - better than eyewitness accounts – which had come through prophets as they were moved or borne along by the Holy Spirit. 

Then he had warned about false teachers who denied the Lord who bought them.  They taught from a motive of greed, coveteousness, and sexual advantage.  

Now, as he approaches the end of this book,  he urges them to remember the words and commandments of the prophets and the apostles.  Peter, Paul, and other apostles knew that they would probably die a martyr’s death (and they did).  They would soon be gone.  Heed the Word which they had learned. 

Know that there will be scoffers and false teachers.  A lot of false teaching will be concerning the Lord’s return.   Be forewarned.  Add spiritual character to your lives.  Peter will conclude this book by urging them to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord.  These warnings and admonitions apply more today than in Peter’s day.  Remember – and be prepared!
