After Lizzie and Neil told each other they loved each other, Lizzie snuggled against his chest. "I can't sleep, Daddy," she admitted. "My arm still hurts, and it hurts more when I try to sleep on my side."
Neil hugged his little girl more tightly and kissed the top of her head. "It's OK, sweetheart. You can stay here on my lap and sleep out here with me tonight. I'll keep my eye on your arm to make sure it doesn't get any worse, although I'm sure you'll be all right."
Just then his phone rang. It was Mark. "Hey, man, what's up?" Neil asked when he answered the phone.
"Dude, I've got to get out of Mom's house. I love her, but I can't take it anymore. She stole from me, she's terrible to you, and she hurt Lizzie. This is really hard for me to do, as I know her excess weight has disabled her, but I'm tired of the way she treats us and need to get out. I was also thinking that it's got to be hard for you to raise your little girl all by yourself as you're both coping with your wife's death, so I thought maybe I could move in with you and help you take care of my adorable little niece."
Neil's eyes widened with surprise and gratitude for his brother's concern. He also felt very sorry for everything Mark had been putting up with regarding their mom. "Dude, you're more than welcome to stay with me and Lizzie. To be honest, it gets lonely with just the two of us and hard trying to juggle everything as a single dad. You're a real lifesaver, man. Come on over to the cabin tonight. I'll give you directions."
After they hung up the phone, Neil texted his brother directions to the cabin. When he turned to look at Lizzie, he saw that she had fallen asleep. Her head was resting in the crook of his neck, and her little hands clung to the collar on his bathrobe. Holding his daughter tightly in his arms, Neil sat down on the couch and waited for his brother to come over.
