Righteousness in Christ A Gift Apart from Works

"But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known... This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." Romans 3:21-24

As believers, we often strive to live rightly, but the beauty of the gospel is that our righteousness doesn’t come from our efforts—it comes from Christ alone. Romans 3:21-24 reveals a profound truth: God’s righteousness is a gift, given through faith, not earned through works. This is the heart of our faith.

Human nature leans toward earning favor. We think good deeds, moral living, or religious acts secure God’s approval. Yet, Scripture is clear: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). No amount of effort can bridge the gap between our sinfulness and God’s holiness. Trying to earn righteousness is like trying to climb a mountain with no summit—it’s impossible.

Enter Jesus. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, He accomplished what we never could. When we place our faith in Him, His righteousness is credited to us. This is called imputation. Christ’s perfect record becomes ours, not because we deserve it, but because God’s grace declares it so. As 2 Corinthians 5:21 says, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

This truth frees us from the burden of performance. We don’t have to strive to prove our worth—Christ has already done it. Our good works flow from gratitude, not obligation. They’re a response to God’s love, not a requirement for it. When we rest in this, we find peace, knowing our standing before God is secure, regardless of our failures.

Lord, thank You for the gift of righteousness through Christ. Help me rest in Your grace, living not to earn Your love but to reflect it. Amen.
