“Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.” Luke 11:47-48 NIV

The ancestors of these current teachers of the law were involved in the killing of the prophets sent by God. When God’s words from prophets were in opposition to man-made laws, the prophets were persecuted, and many were killed. These current teachers of the law had a false sense of honor and respect for the slain prophets by maintaining and building tombs for them. In their hearts they truly were approving of the slaying of the prophets. Jesus exposes their false honor and respect. They certainly did not appreciate being exposed, but Jesus knew what was truly in their hearts.
